11-1-19 Newsletter

Happy Halloween, 3rd Grade Families!  Thank you for all of your help to make this an outstanding, festive week!  Next week, we will not have school on Friday, 11/8 as that will be a conference day.

Our students enjoyed creating spooky drawing with Ms. Kay in Art class on Wednesday.  They also loved seeing their buddies for a fun Halloween activity on Thursday. We enjoyed attending the Halloween carnival hosted by the Middle School!  In writing this week, our third graders wrote letters to their  buddies in Middle School.  The purpose was to inform and make connections.  Next week, we will learn how to fill out envelopes with the sender and recipient information.  In reading this week, students explored several books related to letter writing as well as one of my Halloween favorites.  Students illustrated and wrote about an imaginary broomstick (making a connection to the story).  They wrote about who would ride with them and what their destination would be.  In Social Studies, students presented Native American projects to their classmates.  This was such a great learning experience. In Math, students sharpened their regrouping skills, subtracted three and four digit numbers and checked their answer for correctness by using the inverse operation.

The Food Drive is happening right now!  We have a collection box in our room and we are collecting canned goods, packaged dry goods, wipes and other goodies.  Our participants this week –  thank you Dylan, Mae, Caelan, Mila, Jack.

Congratulations to the Star Student of the Week:  August Schrappen

We have earned 10 Positive Poms this week!   40 more to go! For their most recent Pom Party reward, students received a free homework pass and received an extra 30 minutes of tech time on iPads for playing educational games. Hooray for meeting our teamwork goal of 50 poms!

Math: Students will begin multiplication.  Next week, we will focus on solving multiplication through the REPEATED Addition strategy.  We will also talk about what the X stands for…The X stands for “groups of”.

For example: 4X2 means we have four groups of two.  Using repeated addition we will solve it like this: 4+4 = 8

Social Studies: Next week, students will finish sharing their Native American posters.

Science: We will begin our science unit on FORCES.
